However, content also provides search engines with vital details regarding a website’s relevance to certain phrases.

Search engines all have their own unique complex algorithm, which manages their ranking system. Within this algorithm are numerous contributing factors, all of which are taken into account and used to create SERPs that will accurately reflect a user’s search term. Could SEO Harm My Website?

When it comes to SEO, there are three layers of practitioners:

White Hat – Good, ethical optimisation within Google’s rules

Black Hat – Deliberately flouting the rules to make quick gains, often not worried about the consequences

Grey Hat – Slightly questionable practises, although not illegal in the most part; usually somewhere in between the two, which often means that it may be punished.

Is Local Search Optimisation Now Essential for Business Websites?

When it comes to the future of search engine optimisation, local search looks primed to become indispensable for any business website. Whilst SEO focuses on what it is that your business offers, local search roots that information to a geographic location [see: What is Local Search?].

With the mobilisation of Internet connectivity people aren’t just going online at home or in the office. As such, consumers are increasingly turning to their mobile phones and PDAs to search for businesses and products within their immediate vicinity. This means that wherever we are, whether we are familiar with the surroundings or not, near continuous access to the Internet ensures that we are only a search away from getting directions to the nearest store, bank or hotel.

Posted in Search Engine News

Each month the statistics for search engine usage are published for the world to digest and reflect upon. Whilst the numbers may only marginally fluctuate from month to month, the outright leader always remains the same – Google.

Internationally Google dominates search. According to the latest figures, supplied by ComScore, they have secured almost two thirds of the US market, weighing in with 65.4% of the combined 13.8 billion unique searches. Yahoo achieved only a quarter of that, with a diminished share of 18% whilst a resurgent Bing fell just short of double figures with 9.9%. The rest, which includes AOL and Ask, account for the remaining 6.70%.
