Yahoo! has suggested that the reason why the holiday season has been so positive for online retailers so far is because they have mastered effective advertising techniques.

Effective Online Marketing 'Can Entice Customers' Noah Belson, content quality analyst, wrote on the company’s search marketing blog that companies have begun to master aggressive techniques that draw customers in and boost sales.

He explained that a consumer’s attention can be held by offering the incentives that they want to hear, which may influence the type of SEO services used by firms.

Mr Belson pointed out that by offering incentives such as low prices, discounts and free shipping, online retailers can encourage people to "open their wallets".

"Smart shoppers know they can find great deals online and smart advertisers know that the shoppers are looking for them," he added.

According to statistics from comScore quotes by Mr Belson, online spending in the US over the weekend following Thanksgiving – labelled Black Friday and Cyber Monday – saw a year-on-year increase of 11 per cent.

This week, executive vice-president of Yahoo! North America Hilary Schneider predicted that the mobile internet had the potential for exponential growth.
