The number of consumers visiting skiing and snowboarding websites has risen markedly on the back of the cold snap experienced across the UK at the start of the year, newly released figures show.

Heavy Snow 'Increases Traffic to Ski Websites' According to the latest data from Experian Hitwise, UK visits to winter sports websites were up by 18.5 per cent in the first full week of 2010 compared with the same period of 2009.

At the same time, ski and snowboarding-related internet searches were also seen to be up by seven per cent, suggesting that those retailers or travel operators making use of SEO marketing services would have cashed in on the cold weather.

Notably, the Hitwise figures also reveal that, as well as the traditional Alpine destinations, British winter sports enthusiasts are increasingly looking closer to home for their skiing or snowboarding holiday.

For example, the number of online searches made for the Scottish resort of Glenshee and for the Cairngorms was seen to be up by 400 per cent and 60 per cent respectively as Britons looked to make the most of some of the heaviest snowfall seen in the UK for some years.

These latest figures come soon after Experian Hitwise reported that the proportion of online consumers belonging to higher income groups was up over the Christmas period.

I can concur with that – Snow Menu saw an increase in traffic by over 50% during the cold snap.
