Firms should consider using Google Reader as a method of monitoring their own search engine optimisation (SEO) techniques and to develop ideas of new links that they would like to request.

Use Google Reader 'to Enhance SEO Results' Writing for Search Engine Journal, Mike Tekula explained that Google recently added the option to create RSS feeds for websites that do not provide them, which could help many marketers with their SEO link building.

He pointed out that using the new tool, online companies can monitor when their own link has been added to a website, as well as tracking when other people’s links have been put on an influential hub.

Mr Tekula added: "If you know who your competitors are and want to keep tabs on their SEO efforts create feeds for their most important/central pages."

The expert noted this will allow organisations to see what sort of changes to content their rivals are making.

This week, the same website suggested using email filters to achieve productivity when carrying out SEO tasks such as sorting through analytics reports.
