A market research firm has claimed that the internet is becoming more and more important for retailers when they carry out strategies to maximise sales over holiday periods.

Websites 'Increasingly Important for Retailer Strategies' Will Hodgman, executive vice-president for the Asia-Pacific region at comScore, made his remarks following the publication of a report by the company, which showed that more than eight million Australians – three out of five in the country – visited a retail site during December 2009.

He said: "December continues to be the heaviest month for visitation to retail sites as the holiday shopping season reaches its pinnacle."

Mr Hodgman suggested that companies are beginning to recognise that consumers are using the web for its convenience and because they can compare prices, which has led to more firms investing in internet marketing techniques such as professional SEO services.

"The online channel is an increasingly important component of retailers’ holiday strategies," he added.

Last week, comScore revealed that 131 billion searches were conducted worldwide.
