Could online advertising really be more effective than televised campaigns? Well, according to comScore’s latest research, it is, well at least for Consumer Packaged Goods (CPG) at any rate.

The study found that the Internet was capable of boosting retail sales by as much as 9% where campaigns were able to reach at least 40% of their market audience. That might sound a little tenuous, but by the same measure, targeted television advertising was only able to generate 8%; showing that whilst costs may be different, the outcome certainly isn’t.

UK Internet Users Buying into Social Media

80% of people with access to the Internet in the UK visited a social media site during the month of May. That’s the equivalent of almost 30 million people, all visiting a site at least once.

Clearly this is one of the most obvious indicators of the draw of social media amongst the general public here in the UK, whilst also providing a signal of its worldwide potential. Whilst the statistics from ComScore don’t highlight exactly how people are using these social media platforms, the simple fact that 30 million people are aware of and have used them shows a near universal interest and awareness in them.

14.5 Million Visits to Blogs by UK Users in August 2008

Comscore have just announced in a press release (spookily dated 30th November) that fourteen and a half million of us in the UK visited at least one blog during August this year, accounting for some 41% of the total UK Internet traffic.

Unsurprisingly, Google came out on top-spot with its Blogger platform taking just over nine million visits followed by Wordpress with just under five million visits.

Now That’s a Lot of Searching

In a recent press release by comScore, it was announced that for August 2007, there were 61 billion searches performed.

These searches came from 750 million people over the age of 15 who account for 95 percent of the global Internet population.

To further demonstrate Google’s importance, they accounted for 37.1 billion of these searches with their nearest rival, Yahoo, posting 8.5 billion.
