The much feted Google Caffeine update is a little behind schedule, with extensive testing still ongoing. Currently live on just one datacentre, a global release is still a little way off. But could Europe be next to get it?

Whilst discussing the latest news and issues surrounding Google with WebProNews, Matt Cutts suggested (although was at pains to affirm that it wasn’t official) that the next ‘data centre to be hit’ might be Europe. This could well mean that we could finally see what all the fuss is about on these shores.

Caffeine represents a new and improved Google. It relies on exceptionally quick data centres providing results almost instantaneously. But it isn’t just about faster results. Indexing and crawling are also getting turbo-charged. There’s no visible change for those visiting Google, just a more comprehensive list of results in double-quick time.

Google Caffeine is a new algorithm introduced by Google that should be going live in the New Year. Google Caffeine is an update to the Google system that has been designed to increase the speed and improve the relevance in which search results are generated.

Any overhaul of a Google Algorithm should not be taken lightly and how much of an affect it will have on SEO and current rankings is anybody’s guess.

Of course, Google have not released any of the details around Google Caffeine as yet but the system has been live on some test servers over the past few months.

Touted as the SEO killer [see: Is Google Caffeine the SEO Killer], Google Caffeine is an update to the Google system that has been designed to increased the speed with which results are generated and improve relevance once they arrive. Any significant overhaul of Google has to be taken seriously, but how much it will actually affect SEO and the current rankings is anybody’s guess.

Google are famous for drip feeding information about changes to their algorithm. Matt Cutts is often the one to spread the good and bad news to the wider search community; however, in this instance, Caffeine appears to have been kept largely under wraps.

Google have been busy shaking the sandy foundations on which the old school of SEO teachings were built. The Google Caffeine [see: Is Google Caffeine the SEO Killer?] and Vince algorithm updates look set to move the goalposts, whilst the unceremonious way in which PageRank was evicted from Webmaster Tools [see: Is PageRank Still Relevant], all indicate that the times may be a changing.

But despite the changes, has anything really changed? By abandoning PageRank Google simply reinforced a message that they had been telling the world for years – “don’t become preoccupied with PageRank, it’s not as important as you think!” Whilst Vince has been touted as a ‘brand’ orientated update, it simply isn’t in Google’s best interests to overhaul their entire rankings structure to appease the bigger companies.
